Khin Maung (Bank)

Khin Maung (Bank) (1910-83), major Mandalay painter, “father of modernist painting” in Burma. Took Hla’s correspondence course and a correspondence course later from USA. Published papers on modern art in Burma and proselytized for a modernist movement. Began modernist abstract works as early as 1946. His geometric paintings drew form Traditional inspiration. Participated in Modernist Movement, 1960s-70s. Did some non-objective works. Name also appears as “Khin Maung”. Among his art students were the well-known U Paw Oo Thet and U Win Pe.
