U Lun Gywe is a renowned Burmese painter who works in oil and watercolor. Born on 24 September 1930 in Yangon, Myanmar, he is considered one of the greatest living Burmese painters. His artistic journey combines influences from French Impressionism, Oriental roots, and his own Burmese heritage. He studied under several notable artists, including Thet Win, Chit Maung, San Win, Thein Han, and Ngwe Gaing. In 1954, he graduated from the Art Institute of Teacher’s Training. Initially, U Lun Gywe painted in a realistic and naturalistic vein, influenced by other prominent Burmese painters. Over time, his works evolved into impressionistic pieces, and some might even be considered expressionistic today. His impressionistic style is characterized by quick execution, capturing emotions, textures, light, and shadow. He often focuses on the female form, which is one of his favorite subjects. His devotion to Buddhism is reflected in his work, emphasizing principles of order, harmony, stability, and grace. Outside of Myanmar his work has been exhibited, often in solo shows, in Japan, the Republic of Korea, the People’s Republic of China, Australia, New York City, the Republic of Singapore.[1]
