Nyein Chan Su (born 1973), is Burmese artist, also known as NCS, showcases works inspired by nats, the spirits worshipped in central Burma alongside Buddhism. His paintings are eclectic and versatile. He is a co-founder of an artist-run space, Studio Square Art Gallery.
Nyein was born on 1973 in Rangoon, Myanmar. In 1994. He graduated from the State School of Fine Arts (Yangon) and studied under artists Kyaw Lay, Mya Aye, Sayoe, Tin Aye (MDY), Thit Lwin Soe and Hlaing Bwa. He started his painting career in 2006 and collected photographs of his aunt from family albums, old newspapers and old film posters.
“Gold in the Red”, these works showcase nature scenes, architectural wonders, waterfalls, rivers, and mountain ranges alongside temples. Tiny human figures stand dwarfed by the vastness of the universe in NCS’s paintings.
His bold artistic style utilizes strong brushstrokes and vibrant colors that dominate the canvas. NCS draws deep inspiration from his Burmese heritage and cultural identity. Notably, the color red takes center stage in this series. A solid red base serves as the foundation for each artwork, with subsequent layers and textures built upon it.
According to NCS himself, the color red embodies a range of intense emotions: blood, sweat, anger, hatred, revenge, and fear. This choice reflects the deep cultural and political significance of red in Myanmar.
